Welcome to the Fairfield Public School District! The Winston S. Churchill Upper Elementary School serves approximately 313 students in grades 4 through 6 and offers a strong tradition of educational excellence. Students benefit from small class sizes and an outstanding teacher faculty. The 6th grade is fully departmentalized to prepare students for their transition to the West Essex Junior High School. Language Arts and math are departmentalized at the 5th grade level. Throughout all grade levels, instruction is aligned to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Our classrooms are "cultures of thinking" with an emphasis on reading and writing, cooperative learning and differentiated instruction.

Winston S. Churchill offers a full compliment of learning experiences. In addition to academics, students receive instruction in Spanish, library and media, computer technology, vocal music and physical education. A gifted and talented program is offered. A dedicated computer lab with 25 computers and a Smart Board is used daily by students and staff. Classroom computers and two carts of laptop computers are in use. A comprehensive music program including chorus, band and string ensembles afford students the opportunity to study various musical genres and perform concerts and compete in competitions. Character education is infused throughout the curriculum in every classroom and special assembly programs and events teach anti-bully themes and encourage our school's culture of kindness and respect.

I am available to meet with you, if you have any questions regarding Churchill School. Wishing you and your children a wonderful school year!

Sincerely,
Mr. John S. Smatla
Principal, Winston S. Churchill School
